    Just a minor addition, but that little glockenspiel bit at the end of The Everso Closely Guarded Line is what's known as the Cardiacs Chimes, it's a musical phrase that you'll find in various places across their work. The album Heaven Born and Ever Bright starts with it, for example, and I believe it was also often played at the start of concerts during the so-called Vile Countdown. Within the lore of the band I believe it's commonly regarded as the sort-of 'theme tune' of the Alphabet Business Concern. Last week a bunch of us Pondies actually got together in London and Leeds for a series of tribute concerts, and I can honestly say, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to!

    The lyrics are NOT nonsensical. It's straight up Kabbalah. You just don't speak the "language" yet. The "End" is Kether (The divine, gnostic inspiration, heaven...). The "snake" is the path ascending the tree from "earth" to "heaven". Earth -> Water -> Desert -> Void is the usual imagery. See Band on the Run for another take on this.

    There is a LOT of post rock about, its a very crowded field that's been around for over 25 years but for the most part, the bands don't use classical instruments. Godspeed are probably the most ambitious in the number of instruments and musicians they employ, but albums of 10-20 minute songs with no lyrics are not uncommon. Mono are a band from Japan who work in a similar style, thryve been around since the early 2000's and are still releasing albums.

      It's minimal composition week, so it's rather minimalist because of the lack of instruments. But, I see where you are coming from. It is kinda simple or straightforward or concise without using a lot of compositional variety and yet it is very effective in getting the message and emotions to the audience.

    • @musashimiyamoto586

      @@janeg6759 But there is no minimal composition cause there are NO instruments. It is an a capella song about an extraordinarily traumatising experience and pretty much the bravest thing I have ever heard/seen. I don't think it deserves being categorized in technical musical terms cause that just doesn't do it justice.

      But there is composition. The voice is an instrument just like any other. I could transpose what she sings to sheet music. And since it's just one lead instrument without accompaniment and that one instrument is primarily playing ostinatos you really don't get much more minimal than that. Beyond the technical aspect though, I don't think that digging into why something is effective at being extraordinary art is a negative. No description of an artwork will ever surpass the experience of the art but that should never stop people from attempting to understand what makes art great. And that's not to say that I think everyone should understand everything that they like. For some people, peering behind the curtain and understanding the magic trick robs it of it's wonder. But it's equally important to understand that others might find more enjoyment and appreciation by understanding the processes.

      @@CriticalReactions OK, obviously you are much more of a musical expert than I am, so I won't argue the technical side of it. And you are right, I think sometimes it is advisable not to try and analyse a musical performance like you would a mathematical equasion (also not my favourite subject). In my opinion seeing and hearing Tori perform this song is all you need. At least it is for me.

    As people have noted, "Collapse the Light Into Earth" is a metaphor for the sun setting. It's kind of a vague metaphor though, because I could easily see it representing the light of life going six feet under as well. In Absentia is a loose concept album about serial killers (some rape too, I believe) so the lyrics could be interpreted as sung by a serial killer whose partner realised who he was. Then again, it could also only be a broken-hearted love song since the concept is loose and not present in every track on the album. Steven has commented on it in interviews but then again, he also says that he lies a lot in interviews so who knows. Btw, I would put a 6/8 feel to this song rather than 3/4. The piano is not accentuating any specific beats but the vocal phrasing makes more sense that way.

But interesting take you have here..

    Some notes that might help you better understand this album: * The first part I think you have grasped quite well. * The second section is about how mankind gets lost searching context, just like God did. 1. Lilium Cruentus. Scene 2 and 4. Scene 2 is black and white and represents the burial of the loved one. Scene 4 is the moment she is about to die. Besides, you get the wrong idea here. This song portrais the first need to have something beyond. Depicts the creation of God to fight loss. The whole concept here is this fractal idea that God create us, then we create God, then we ask for God's guidance, just like God created us seeking some kind of guidance. 2. Nauticus. The name is a paralelism to the probe that becomes God. Just like God appears adrift in the first track after waking up. Humanity is adrift here after waking up. We are God and God is us. Besides, this song connects Lilium Cruentus with Dea Pecuniae (Money Goddess or economy). We create God as a tool, then become God's tool. We have been adrift for so long and are so lost that Mr. Money can exist. 3. Dea Pecuniae. Again the same idea, we create money as a tool, then we are tooled in the name of Dea Pecuniae, whose biggest representative is Mr. Money (or capitalism incarnate). We as humanity are adrift, and we are at the end of the road in the excess of capitalism. The radio is about hibernation. Mr. Money wants to become immortal (in the song, Dea Pecuniae says the big party they are in is just "a taste of divinity"). Of course, he creates immortality and becomes a slave to immortality (as seen in Iter Impius). Again, the same fractal idea. 4. Daniel Gildenlow is the one lead singer. Yes, it's hard to believe one man can do all this, but it's him. The band makes choirs. 5. All music, note by note is composed by Daniel Gildenlow. The same goes for all sound design. * The third section is about how mankind breaks its link to God and is left to their own devises. 6. Vocari Dei "lyrics" are messages sent to "God" (an answering machine) by Pain of Salvation fans. 7. God created a tool (mankind) to find itself, but becomes a tool of its creation (as seen in Vocari Dei, with mankind asking him to fix their shit). Again, the fractal. 8. It's fun you talk about Nihil Morari as the domino pieces coming down. There're plenty musical and even lyrical callbacks before this song. Just like there have been a lot of clues for our society to see the wrongs before reaching the point we are in now. This song is simply the end of all that, when reality is so fucked up you can't unsee. So, in a way, you've been oblivious (understandbly) to all the previous clues, but this one, you can't unsee. 9. About the time signature, I think it's "narrative driven", so to say. In their debut album, at the end of the song "Nightmist", the drumming becomes chaotic time-wise. It somehow resembles a heart failing (the song ends with the death of the main character). I think this is the same idea, but the character being our society/. * The fourth section. 10. Nauticus doesn't only search for information, but also has the information of humanity packed in for potential "others" to find and help. 11. Iter Impius is about Mr. Money being the last human alive after waking up from hibernation. He is the ruler of the ruins forevermore. The idea of becoming a slave to his own creation (immortality). 12. Nauticus travels through space for an eternity and becomes Animae again. Nauticus was created by mankind to find answers, but eventually it becomes God and creates mankind to find answers. Fractals all over again. I love this album. Glad you did an analysis.

    I am a bit sleep deprived, and have been handling a lot of problems this week (although somehow I am largely resolving them all), so this initial comment is going to probably be a little more brief than it would be otherwise. [But naturally it's too long after all.] Obviously I am really pleased that you enjoyed this so much. I think one point you made is similar to what I was trying to express here and there previously, that there is free/avant-garde jazz out there that is nevertheless accessible in a certain way. A lot of what Shipp records falls into that category for me. Carter, Parker, and Shipp had recorded together previously, and Shipp and Parker have played together in many different groupings. From what I have read, Parker primarily played with Cecil Taylor in the 80's. And all three of them have the long record of performance that is typical of active jazz musicians. I actually like Carter's more relatively more "inside" playing to some of the more skronk-oriented saxophonists, etc. that Shipp has collaborated with. For instance, as much as I love Shipp's sound, I just stay away from his collaborations with Ivo Perelman. There must be something there is Shipp has recorded dozens of albums with him, but I can't connect with his playing. I think the question of how improvised is improvised, is a tricky one. Of the three musicians here, I am most familiar with Shipp, and he definitely has certain things that are almost like motifs that recur in his music (improvised and composed). I think for musicians like these, it is partly a matter of building a personal vocabulary, and then using that vocabulary in different ways, with some maybe entirely new things thrown in now and then. I haven't always liked the "vocabulary" metaphor applied to music, but in Shipp's case, it seems an apt way to describe what is distinctive about his playing. Some of what he does reminds me harmonically of modern classical music, but somehow given a warmer, more approachable reworking. For what it's worth, I don't think he experiments with unusual tunings. I can't remember any discussions of that. I think he just wrenches unusual groups of sound from pianos in standard tuning. It's interesting to me that it reminds you of microtonal music though, considering how much of that I like (but mostly from the east where it's just normal). Seraphic Light 3 actually does stand on its own--there is a break with audience applause before it--but the first part his my favorite "movement." As far as I can discern, this is the first reaction video for any of these musicians, so it will be interesting to see what kind of response it gets. I don't know to what extent people who listen to this type of music would be interested in reaction videos. I am guessing most wouldn't be, but I might not be the only exception. And this comment is growing longer, of course. You might be interested to know that Shipp has worked with hip-hop producers, and experimented with electronics. I kind of see that as a stage in his development. Also, he gives really good interviews generally, sometimes funny ones in which his plays provocateur, but generally thoughtful ones. He is also someone who, to my mind had continued to refine his sound over the years.

    • @shryggur
      @shryggur День тому

      I also felt it sounded like microtonal. That's a fantastic feat to make this impression on the standard, properly tuned piano. And it's more approachable and emotive than many other things out there for sure. I still prefer shorter tunes - such long tracks wear me down too much and I stop listening intently enough around 10 minutes in or so. I'm too casual for this :( I'm certainly going to listen to the hip-hip collaboration; any recommendations? The closest thing I ever heard that comes to my mind is Chris Dave Trio and it's amazing

    • @rudymeixell3426
      @rudymeixell3426 19 годин тому

      @@shryggur Equilibrium, from 2003, alternates between tracks with hip-hop beats, and more diffuse, ambient tracks, sometimes with electronics. Well, I guess I shouldn't say hip-hop beats. They aren't programmed beats, but the drummer sticks to more of a hip-hop feel, which maybe is ultimately just from funk, but somehow it sounds more hip-hop than funk (even if it is doing the live equivalent of playing funk breakdown samples?). But Shipp also collaborated with Anti-Pop Consortium on an album. I don't even remember what that one sounds like at this point, which means it probably has more rapping on it than I want to deal with. Anyway, Shipp's playing on Equilibrium is not quite as adventurous or distinctive as what you hear in Seraphic Light, but it's a good album that stands on its own. His solo piano recordings tend to feature tracks of moderate length. Even his trio albums tracks are often on the shorter side, although sometimes they get lengthier. His trio put out a new album this year which I think is good and comparatively accessible. The longest track is just under twelve minutes long, but some are under five minutes. Chris Dave I am unfamiliar with. I will check him out.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions 11 годин тому

      To start, thanks so much for the recommendation and I'm quite glad you changed your mind from your previous pick. I don't know much about X but I doubt it would have been as mind opening as this was. I agree with shryggur that the "microtonal sounds on a standard tuned piano" is a wild feat that I don't understand but enjoyed quite a bit. It's cool to hear that Shipp continues to refine his sound and doesn't simply lean on his already impressive skill. Expanding his skills into the realm of hip hop and electronics sounds both sounds neat and is a great idea for trying out new sounds.

      @@CriticalReactionsI am glad it was a good experience for you. I enjoyed the video. This is definitely more out of the ordinary than X, but honestly, the first three X albums are gold, and since you like punk, I think you would enjoy them. Easily one of my favorite rock bands--period. Their music has a rockabilly component which I didn't even recognize back when I was in high school, but now it's obvious, and yet the total package is definitely punk. Most of the early X songs have a lot of forward momentum which in a way that reminds me of early Beatles songs, but without sounding like the Beatles. I remember Dylan complaining that rock had last the "roll," and X manages to not just be punk rock, but punk rock and roll. I bet Matthew Shipp likes X! Henry Rollins actually put out some of Shipp's music, so he has some first-hand connection to punk. To bring it around full-circle. And I know he likes some alternative rock stuff, etc.

      @@CriticalReactions Remember, you could always add the new Matthew Shipp Trio album to your personal listening list. It's good, and more accessible than some of his trio albums. Actually, it's my favorite album so far this year, but this isn't a great year for me, for albums, and I tend to like any solo Shipp or Shipp-led projects to at least some degree. Almost all of those end of making it on my personal year end list. I still tend to prefer solo Shipp more though. If you were to literally just give the first track on the new album 30 seconds, I think you would be drawn in!

    Depression is THE thing with Ian Curtis and Joy Division! And: the first Moog came in 1964, ten years later Jean-Michel Jarre made synths mainstream, five years before "Unknown Pleasures".

    Ouph. Parallax. That's a rough one. A technically important step for music for C64 games, but not an easilly approachable one. Too see what magic could be done with the C64 I recommend tunes like any of the songs from Last Ninja 1 & 2 (loading screens or game levels), Commando, IK+, Nemesis the Warlock, R-Type, Rambo 2 Title Screen, Turrican 3, Arkanoid, Fist II, Legend of Kage, Saboteur 2, Mission Impossible, Deathscape, Krakout. But really, The Last Ninja 2 is a must listen. Trust me.

    Having listened to this song and album A LOT as a teenager when it first came out and constantly through the years up until now as a middle aged whatever I always get a powerful reaction to this track. I remember being super stoned listening to this at 18 and crying like a baby listening to it the day my mother died. It’s been with me.

    A big part of this track that you sort of noted but could be expounded upon is the physicality of the music - the rhythm of the low-frequency beats resemble the rider's heartbeat, the higher frequency you can hear the wheels and bike chains going back and forth from driving and coasting, etc. Kraftwerk does that a lot with Autobahn and Trans Europe Express, too.

I don't know of anything that captures winter with its cold and monotony better than this Swiss project. It's about letting go and forgetting time and not about variety and excitement. Emotions and astmosphere is everything for me, every other thing comes after this two points.

    one of my fav songs ever just based on its atmosphere and its melody. It makes me feel like I'm in a dark place with thick fog surrounding me at all times. I'm not a complete expert of the history of Ian Curtis (the vocalist) but from what I remember, he was battling with depression at the time and tragically committed suicide in between the release of their 2 albums. The band then broke up and formed a new group called New Order where they explored new sounds of Synth Pop.

    I would say Blizaro plays about 30% this, 30% doom metal, and 40% a straight up mix of them. This kind of track is sometimes an interlude, but not always. And some of them though in this vein are a *bit* less minimal. You hit the nail on the head about it sounding like an old horror show/movie. That's basically what they do. You could film an old Italian horror movie and use their music as a score. John Gallo is the sole person doing the studio work (still? I think) and is a big piece of a few projects in those styles of music. This is a compilation album and this song is from the project's 3rd demo (before any albums) but I think it's fair to say Gallo knew the type of music he wanted to make fairly well at this point, so I don't think the factors that are off are early wobbliness. I find a lot of his music... more interesting than roundly satisfying, I listen to it in specific moods, and think it's definitely part of how he writes (for better or worse).

    i dont know if this has anything to do with this songs lyrics in particular but he has songs that is about ppl who ripped him off on Broder daniels first 2 albums Saturday Night Engine (1995) and Broder Daniel (1996) with their (then) current record label EMI they got their share of 6% of all sold records even if Henrik wrote all the songs he had that mindset that all the members should get their equal share so they got 1,2% each people in the music industry said that he should be thankful that he earned anything at all since they let him work with his music, he said that sounded reasonable since he didn't know better then they changed to Dolores Records (1997) and got 12% of the record sales and a bigger share of the royalties when Broder Daniel Forever was released in 1998 when the record label Telegram bought Broder Daniels catalog they were promised to get 20% but didn't get anything according to Henrik himself when it comes to Merchendise he hasn't earned anything from it what income he had was performance shares of royalties (the compensation you get when the song is played for example on Radio or TV) but the rest of the income did the record label keep, henrik doesn't have the contract they signed and the record label refuse to give him a copy when he asked this is the reason he chosen to release all his future music on his own Bandcamp page instead of through a record label He never had much money even though the great successes with Broder Daniel, he even had to go to the pawn shop with his instruments to get some money, and he wrote one of the biggest hit songs in Swedish history and had his band included in Swedish Music Hall of Fame in 2018 besides that i know that he has been talking in interviews that he had both a drug and alcohol abuse, i feel like he choose to sing about it in a positive tune and i get to thinking about the Joker from Batman He does bad stuff but he does it with a big smile on his face About the genre, he makes indierock/indiepop which means that his music is too diverse to put into a specific rock or pop subgenre Indie as in independent, he do his own thing

    As a cycling fan, I think you're right about the music being analogous to riding in the actual TdF. A stage in the Tour is roughly 160km (100 miles) long on average. That's far enough for there to be a significant change between the start and arrival of a stage, but the change is gradual. You may start the day in an open field and end on top of a mountain, but you're not suddenly switching from one to the other.

    I like black metal quite a bit and have listened to it for years, but this more lo-fi ambient style is not really for me in general. Granted I haven't listened to a lot of black metal the last couple of years, which without a doubt makes it more difficult than it used to be as most music I listen to nowadays have a completely different production. But I remember getting some of the Darkspace albums years ago and having a tough time getting into those as well (I did enjoy them some days and some days it didn't click). Don't get me wrong, I understand the appeal, but I probably need a little more fidelity to completely click with it myself. I remember enjoying Forest Silence for example, which also is more ambient black metal with a bit higher fidelity production.

    I had the same reaction. Confused and bewildered. This is the first Cocteau Twins song I heard as well. I heard about 1 minute of it listening on a stereo in a basement and had to change my settings. I immediately took the CD out to my car, went on a scenic drive, and listened to the entire album about 4 times over. I'd never heard anything like them. Nothing worked, but I couldn't quit listening, and I never have quit. It's just an impressionistic wall of sound. I quit trying to figure out the production and instrumentation and just let my mind wonder. I now have many favorites over their many releases but this album is a masterpiece of "shoegaze", ethereal, pop. Their album Blue Bell Knoll is also a heavy favorite of mine. Thanks for the video.
